Living on Cocoa Beach is a delight in the summer, as the sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. The Sea Turtle Preservation Society monitors the beach every day and records all new nests, and marks about 1/3rd of them. Beachside residents are required to keep window shades drawn from 9p to 5a to ensure hatchlings head for the ocean (lit by the moon as the brightest light source) and not the buildings.

A friend was on the beach a couple of days ago when a rep from the society was evaluating a recently hatched nest, and they were able to help a couple of stragglers find their way to the water -- where the real journey of survival begins....

This is clearly the ride of a lifetime caught on video. We don't even get 1/20th of this size here in Cocoa Beach, but there is a knee-to-shoulder-high swell coming on Monday - woo hoo! :)

Random shots from Cocoa Beach, FL

No surprise, I'm a photo nut and will be importing some of my best to Multply very soon. Recently for fun, I entered one of my shots in a butterfly contest held by our local newspaper, Florida Today.

R
eader voting takes place this week - so if you're interested and like my picture, feel free to vote for # 175 in the "18 & Over" age group: http://www.floridatoday.com/butterflygate.html

If you also click on the photo to enlarge it, you'll see a tiny snail near the butterfly which was a very unique find when photographing a relatively small butterfly to begin with. :)

Though winning is a bit of a longshot, one of the perks would be a "behind the scenes tour" of the zoo, which would be a complete blast for a photo nut like me. And now you know I'm over 18 too.... nyuk nyuk.
